GUARANA - Maues: Land of the Guarana and Satere-Mawe Indians

This new and special expedition brings you deep into virgin jungle near Maues, 267km from Manaus. We will live with natives, explore with them the jungle and its wildlife and observe them on their hunting and fishing expeditions for survival. This tour includes a unique optional visit to the Reserve of the Satere-Mawe Indians. Their Tuchaua will show us his tribe Satere-Mawe, its myths, legends and rituais.

Details

01 Day
The tour starts at 15 p.m. We travel by regional boat to Maues (267km from Manaus). We will pass the Meeting of the Waters and observe some pink dolphins.

02 Day
After arrival at 10 a.m. in Maues we will meet our indian guide(*1) from the Satere-Mawe tribe(*1). During lunch he will give a short briefing about the tribe, precautions to be taken when visiting the reserve and the rituals. During the transfer to the indian reserve (4 hours) we will stop at a sandy river beach and take some jungle fruits. Late afternoon we will arrive in the Barreirinha village and greeted by the Tuchaua and his family. He will show us his village and daily life of the indians. Dinner and participation in rituals of the Satere-Mawe. Overnight in the house of the Tuchaua.

03 Day
We will get up early in the morning to help the Satere Mawe to catch some fish for lunch. Canoeing in the beautiful igarape (flooded jungle area) with our indian guide and a small jungle trek to the next village. Lunch, exchange of gifts and farewell. There will be an opportunity to purchase some handycrafts.
Transfer in canoe to the Igarape Limao south of Maues. In the evening night excursion by canoe to observe some animals and spot caiman. Overnight in caboclos house.

04 Day
After breakfast we will explore the virgin jungle of the Igarape Limao. The native guide will show us how to survive in the jungle (fruits, hunting techniques, jungle camping, medical plants, obtaining fresh water) and three Samuaua trees.
Those who booked the 04 day tour will return on a jungle path (2 hours) to the Vera Cruz Beach opposite Maues and have Lunch on the beach. Exploring of the igarapes, home to many exotic birds and sloths. Return to Manaus at 18 p.m.

Those with the 07 day tour will do a long jungle trek (3 hours) to the Indigenous Community Novo Paraiso. Overnight in the house of a family from the Mura tribe. After an exhausting day the family will prepare for us the traditional Sapko (natural Guarana) drink.

05 Day
We will get up early in the morning to continue our trekking on a secret indigenous path to the Igarape Acu (4 hours). On the way we will pass through virgin jungle and two igarapes (transfer in wooden canoes). After lunch in the Mahatu Jungle House (*2) we will visit to the chacra (Manioc and Guarana plantation, jungle fruits and medical plants) and do canoeing in the igarape. At night we will explore with native guides (one guide per person) the jungle, observe a lot of wildlife and try to speer caiman and fishes. With some luck we will hear the sounds of the jaguar.

06 Day
After breakfast we will observe natives hunting and fishing techniques with arrow, bow and dogs (and in modern times also guns). In the evening Tucunare (peakok bass) fishing and speering of fishes. There will be a second chance to observe the wildlife at night and hear the jaguar.

07 Day
Transfer in motorized canoe to the mouth of the Igarape Acu with the Parana River (3 hours). On the way we will hear Monkeys and take also the chance to fish for Tucunares. On the river we will step over to a speed boat and arrive in the Vera Cruz community after one hour. Lunch on the beach and exploration of the igarapes, home to exotic birds and sloths. Relaxing on the sandy river beaches before boarding the regional Boat to Manaus, leaving at 18 a.m. After an exiting river cruise we will arrive in Manaus next day in the afternoon (optional transfer by taxi from Itacotiara with arrival in Manaus at 9 a.m.).

OBS: (1*) Only if tour is booked with visit to the Reserve of the Satere-Mawe tribe. Advance booking with
          passport needed to obtain the permissions from the local authorities.In the reserve are living
          only indians and ocasionally staff from government authorities (health, education).
     (2*) The Mahatu Jungle House - originally designed as resthouse for a local Maues family - is located
          deep in virgin jungle, approx 40km from Maues near the community Sao Tome at the Igarape Acu.
          Access only by motorized canoe (5 hours) or during a two-day jungle trekking. The population
          in this area are caboclos (mixed white and indian origin) and some descendents of the Mura,
          Munduruku or Satere-Mawe indians. They live in the jungle from small plantations (chacras
          with manioc, guarana and jungle fruits), fishing and hunting for survival.

What to bring?

Mosquitos repelent.
